New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie might be securing himself a last place finish in the Republican Primary.
According to NJ.com, a woman at a town hall meeting asked Christie what he would do as president to “save our nation” from the “invasion” of illegal immigrants.
To the ire of many conservatives, Christie, a likely presidential candidate, said he welcomes immigrants.
“There are a lot of folks who come across our borders who are not enemies. We have to encourage immigration in a legal fashion. But I think it’s important to remember this is a country that’s built on immigrants,” he said.
Christie added that he was in favor of making every employer use e-Verify to make sure their employees are all legally in this country.
“Most people come here illegally because they want to work. We should make every employer use the e-Verify system and say, ‘You can’t hire someone if they’re illegal.’ …We need to enforce this against employers very aggressively,” Christie said.
But his most controversial statement was about the country’s southern border.
“I’m not a guy who’s been in favor of building a wall or fence along the entire southern border because it’s too expensive and inefficient,” Christie said.
This is what Christie calls an “adult conversation” on immigration.
It’s apparent that the Governor never heard of Israel’s 140-mile border fence with Syria.
According to the Washington Post, the fence was completed in 2013 and stopped illegal immigration and human trafficking almost instantly.
In 2012, 10,000 Africans attempted to cross the border, but the following year almost no one did. Israel’s fence has prevented the humanitarian crisis that European has endured from African border crossing.
Some argue that if Israel’s $350 million fence could secure their borders, the U.S. could spend an equivalent $5 billion to prevent the border surge and humanitarian crisis on its border.
