Missouri state senator proposes statewide ban on seersucker suits

If one Missouri legislator had his way, Show-Me state residents would no longer be able to wear seersucker suits in public.

Missouri State Sen. Ryan McKenna (D-Jefferson) proposed a statewide ban on seersucker suits this week because he believes that adults look “ridiculous”  in seersucker.

“Any person living in this state aged 8 and under may wear seersucker suits at their leisure,” McKenna’s handwritten amendment to Senate bill 437 reads. “Any person over the age of 8 living in this state may not wear seersucker suits because adults look ridiculous in seersucker suits with the exception of Koolaid.”

Explaining the “under of the age of 8” clause, McKenna argues that “children look adorable in seersuckers” but “adults look ridiculous.”

“My three-year-old looks cute in that [seersucker],” he told the St. Louis Riverfront Times.

McKenna ultimately withdrew his amendment, admitting that he submitted it as a joke. Nonetheless, he still refuses to be “bullied by the seersucker caucus,” a group of senators who wear seersucker suits to work every Wednesday.

“It’s grown to maybe half the Senate, but there’s a group of us that refuse,” McKenna told the Times. “They are getting stronger by the week with their bullying tactics.”
