‘Grandma’ actress Lily Tomlin weighs in on Donald Trump

Established actress and “groundbreaking comic voice” Lily Tomlin is saying something in a more serious tone about one of the most talked about and controversial GOP presidential candidates.

“It might be good to have a guy like that in the White House,” Tomlin, 75, told TheWrap of Donald Trump’s candidacy, before adding, “it couldn’t be any worse than some of the others who wanna get in there.”

Tomlin, best known for her part in the 1960s TV series Laugh-In, has won the Mark Twain Award for American humor and the Kennedy Center Honor and is now starring in her first lead role in 27 years in the new Paul Weitz film Grandma.

With no signs of slowing down, Tomlin spoke to TheWrap about her admirable career history and her new roles, but displayed “her wry grin” when the interview turned to more current topics.

Her character “Elle” in Grandma, Tomlin said, “connected with her being a feminist writer,” predicting that “we’ll probably have a second wave of feminism…unless Rick Santorum wins.”

With that can of worms opened, interviewer Steve Pond quipped, “I don’t think that Donald Trump would usher in a new wave of feminism, either.”

How’s that for unbiased reporting?

Tomlin cooly added, “I wonder what he would do. You don’t know what he would do. C’mon, he’s liable to do anything, good or bad.”

After her calm and fair response on Trump, her interviewer delved again into social topics, asking Tomlin, who married her partner Jane Wagner in 2013, what she thought of the Supreme Court’s ruling on same-sex marriage in June.

“It’s made people soften, and then suddenly we’re enveloped and assimilated into the culture. And I thought it was amazing and remarkable,” said Tomlin.
