What says the end of high school quite like celebrating the teachings of Joseph Stalin while in a poofy dress or rented tuxedo?
High school seniors at Cottonwood Classical Preparatory School in Alberquerque, N.M. voted this week to make the theme of their senior prom “Prom-unism,” a communism-themed twist on the age-old high school tradition, local news station KRQE reported.
While most schools host a prom with “A Night Under the Stars” theme or Cottonwood students’ other choice, “A Night in the Reef,” this year the seniors wanted something different.
Not all of the students are happy about it, however.
Some students told KRQE that the vote was the work of “jokesters” and that they hope “Cottonwood would realize the seriousness of having a very powerful and destructive idea as the theme for a prom.”
The administration told the news station that it is not set in stone, but some members are backing the student vote.
Our students are in the International Baccalaureate program, so they are very academically focused. One of the classes they enjoy the most is a world history class,” said Sam Obenshain, executive director at Cottonwood.
“We want to make sure we honor the students’ voices but at the same time we use this as a learning experience for them.”
If it stands, it’s unclear how far the students want to take the theme.
Red decorations are easy, but will they also be handing out the spiked punch evenly? Must the glitter on the prom dresses not exceed a certain amount per dress? How many flowers per corsage?
Questions abound.
