President Barack Obama has called in celebrities before, using stars — such as Jennifer Hudson, Katy Perry, Beyonce and Jay-Z — to help ensure his reelection and promote his signature law. And now he’s calling on two former cast members from The West Wing to promote the “Big Block of Cheese Day.”
Yes, it’s really a thing.
On Jan. 29, the day after the State of the Union, the White House will be fielding questions from the public, inviting them to dialogue with the President and figuratively eat some cheese. Actors Bradley Whitford and Josh Malina, who played Josh Lyman and Will Bailey, respectively, even helped the White House promote the event with a short spoof featuring White House Press Secretary Jay Carney.
For those of you who are unfamiliar with the show The West Wing and President Andrew Jackson’s famous block of cheese, here’s a clip to help you understand.
As awesome as eating a giant block of cheese would be, Obama obviously isn’t going to have people come and eat cheese in the foyer of the White House. Instead, the White House will be monitoring social media real time on Twitter, Tumblr, Facebook, Instagram and Google+ to answer questions from ordinary Americans.
The official hashtag will be #AskTheWH and Americans are encouraged to start asking questions now. Time will tell how many and what type of questions actually end up being answered. But to be sure, Carney will appreciate each and every one of them.
