Jon Stewart mocked potential Democratic presidential candidates Hillary Clinton and Joe Biden on “The Daily Show” Tuesday for making multiple claims of their “poverty” in an effort to appeal to the American public.
“What’s with the poverty Tourette’s?” Stewart asked, flabbergasted. “Why do these two seem to think we need a hobo for president?”
“Own what you have, it’s fine,” Stewart said, directing his comments at both politicians. “And, more important, why do you think we’ll believe them? I mean both you guys have had your faces on book covers. Books written by them about them. That usually means you’re doing pretty good.”
Specifically, Stewart referred to Clinton’s admission to Diane Sawyer earlier this month that she and her husband were “dead broke” when they left the White House in 2001.
“I still get emotional just thinking about it,” wailed Stewart, mimicking Clinton as he wiped his eyes with a $100 bill.
In the same interview, Hillary alleged that she and Bill “struggled to piece together the resources for mortgages for houses” upon the end of his presidency.
“Yeah, when you’re appealing to the middle class, you may want to use the singular when referring to the most valuable asset most people will ever come in contact with,” scolded the comedian.
Biden has given Clinton a run for her money (or lack there of) recently by making repeated statements about his own meager finances, calling himself “the poorest man in Congress” at the White House summit on working families this week.
“Don’t hold it against me that I don’t own a single stock or bond,” the vice president continued. “Don’t hold it [against me] that I don’t have a savings account.”
“Don’t hold it against me, but my clothes are made of old curtains,” Stewart mocked. “Don’t hold it against me, but I s–t in a bucket outside.”
Biden’s claims turned out to be exaggerations after further investigation showed that he does hold money in savings and has made investments, though those belong to his wife, according to the White House.
“I’m homeless,” the ‘Daily Show’ host said, continuing to impersonate Biden. “I happen to stay in a mansion belonging to my lovely bride. Kind of like the King of England.”
Vice President Biden makes $230,700 each year at his White House post, which means that he earns well over four times the median household income in the United States. Hillary Clinton has a net worth of at least $50 million and rakes in over $200,000 for each speech she delivers.
