Rep. Paul Ryan stresses fiscal responsibility in CPAC address

Rep. Paul Ryan (R-Wisc.) stuck to his guns at the Conservative Political Action Conference on Friday morning, delivering a speech laden with pleas for fiscal responsibility and pushing the GOP budget plan.

“We balance the budget in ten years without raising taxes,” Ryan said of the new House budget. “How do we do this? You know, it’s really pretty simple. We stop spending money we don’t have.”

The Congressman entered the room to a standing ovation from the roaring crowd, giving the audience a sample of what a Ryan 2016 campaign rally would feel like — and his talking points would likely change little if the Wisconsin politician decided to run for the GOP presidential nomination.

Ryan slammed the Democrats for their budget, saying it wouldn’t ever balance.

“If we did nothing, meaning not pass their budget, the government would save money,” he said.

He stressed the importance of action in the face of the impending debt crisis.

“Our debt — it’s already bigger than our economy,” Ryan said.

He argued that Democrats only take action in crisis situations, leading to back room deals, more debt and government overreach. Ryan also noted that Republicans don’t want to make cuts and balance the budget for its own sake, but are instead seeking to preserve and support the social structures that make America great.

Ryan also said that Republicans should be interacting more with these communities and social structures, not just talking about them, but talking with them. He said happiness isn’t found in “government fiats,” but relationships and interaction.

Unlike the chaos that results from Democrats’ inaction, Ryan said the Republican budget will restore order and the necessary cuts will make the government leaner and more effective, resulting in a better life for al Americans.

“They are the party of shared hardship,” he said of Democrats. “We are the party of equal opportunity.”
