Bernie Sanders defends use of drone program, will not end it

Bernie Sanders would not end the drone program if he wins the presidency.

Sanders advocated limiting the program to avoid killing innocent people, but does not want to shutter the program, he said Sunday on ABC’s This Week with George Stephanopoulos.

“I think we have to use drones very, very selectively and effectively. That has not always been the case,” Sanders said.

His campaign website noticeably lacks a section on foreign policy.

Sanders has focused his campaign around income and wealth inequality, and reform targeting the financial sector and campaign finance.

Interviews haven’t much focused on his foreign policy thoughts. His legislative history shows Sanders to be mostly anti-war, though exceptions have emerged.

“There are times and places where they have been absolutely counter-effective and have caused more problems than they have solved. When you kill innocent people, what the end result is that people in the region become anti-American who otherwise would not have been,” Sanders said of the drone program.

How Sanders would reform the program to make it more effective, however, is open for discussion.
