Bernie Sanders has ‘serious problems’ with Uber

Ashton Kutcher has a serious problem. He’s a staunch liberal Democrat and an investor in Uber, the company all progressives love to hate.

Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) joined other liberals like NYC Mayor Bill de Blasio and Hillary Clinton in criticizing the car sharing company in an interview with Bloomberg Thursday, saying Uber has “serious problems” and is “unregulated.”

Uber and many other startup tech companies like Airbnb or Lyft have workers on-demand, making them independent contractors and unable to receive the benefits and protections afforded to full-time employees.

The company pounced back at Sanders, disputing his claim that they are “unregulated.” A spokesman for Uber said there are 54 jurisdictions in the U.S. that have regulations for ride hailing services.

While Clinton has criticized how Uber treats its employees in general terms, Sanders is the only Democratic presidential candidate to call them out by name.

Even former Maryland Gov. Martin O’Malley (D) who is positioning himself to Clinton’s left said he was “optimistic about companies like Uber.”
