The support from the hometown of the defending Super Bowl champs is likely to be a tad mellow on Sunday when the Seattle Seahawks play against the New England Patriots, as the city’s marijuana retailers prepare for what is expected to be a profitable weekend.
Employees at Solstice, a Seattle-based medical marijuana retailer, are rolling 12,000 joints for its special “12th Pack” promotion ahead of Super Bowl Sunday. That works out to 180 to 220 joints per eight-hour shift – double the normal pace, reported NBC News.
The “12th Pack” is available only to medical marijuana users, although recreational use is legal in Seattle, and is a play on football fans’ “12th man” nickname.
Washington state voters approved medical use of marijuana in 1998 and in 2011 the state legislature permitted collective gardens by medical marijuana patients. In 2012, Washington state voters legalized the possession of small amounts of marijuana and the state Liquor Control Board is in the process of developing regulations for marijuana production, selling, and delivery.
There is a $27 fine for smoking marijuana in Seattle in public, however. So football fans will have to enjoy their 12th mans at home.
