Rob Lowe: libertarian?

Actor Rob Lowe made some libertarian-tinged remarks in The New York Times Magazine this Sunday regarding his political beliefs.

Lowe, whose career has included political roles in such shows and films as “The West Wing,” “Parks and Recreation,” and “Killing Kennedy,” was once a strong Democrat and Michael Dukakis supporter. He’s revealed in the past that he became a registered independent, and his comments in the magazine provided some additional detail about what’s behind his non-party politics.

“My thing is personal freedoms, freedoms for the individual to love whom they want, do with what they want,” he said in response to a direct question about what it is he ‘believes.’ “In fact, I want the government out of almost everything.”

He also mentioned that he now “judge(s) the candidates for who they are” at the ballot box.

While not disclosing whether or not he identifies more with left- or right-leaning politics nowadays, Lowe opined to Sean Hannity a few years ago that in his experience, conservatism is built on “logic.”
