Republicans are sick of Donald Trump’s antics.
After a tape was leaked on Friday by the Washington Post of Trump bragging about committing sexual assault to Billy Bush on Access Hollywood in 2005, many GOP leaders are ditching the presidential candidate en masse.
However, most of them aren’t ready to say “I’m with Her” and throw their support behind Hillary Clinton. Instead, they’re all in for Libertarian candidate Gary Johnson.
In an interview with ABC affiliate in New Mexico, KOAT 7 news, Johnson said he’s received a mountain of support.
“It’s such a massive amount that the campaign can’t even begin to deal with it at the moment,” Johnson said of the Republicans who disavowed Trump. “They’re wanting to know how they can lend their support, and what’s the best way they can communicate their support because they’re done.”
He continued by condemning Trump’s “locker room talk” by saying, “Those are comments that I don’t think are acceptable in a locker room. …I would have never said something like that in my entire lifetime, and his apology was not an apology at all.”
The support Johnson is receiving won’t be enough to win the election, but there is a good chance that he can play spoiler, particularly in his home state of New Mexico. The RealClearPolitics average has Johnson sitting at 19 percent behind Clinton’s 40 percent and Trump’s 32 percent. However, their most recent poll was from October 2nd, which was a week ago. KOAT7’s poll shows that Johnson is at 24 percent support in New Mexico trailing Clinton’s lead by 11 points, with the expectation that his numbers will climb.
In recent weeks, the Clinton campaign has ramped up attack ads on Gary Johnson over his numerous gaffes, particularly narrowing on his lack of foreign policy experience. If Johnson’s numbers continue to climb due to disgruntled Republicans, Clinton is going to have to hit Trump and Johnson even harder than before.
