[WATCH] Weiner and Spitzer’s re-emergence into politics benefits young people

Sure, some may questions the ethics and values of former New York Gov. Eliot Spitzer (D) and Congressman Anthony Weiner (D) after both were caught up in their fair share of scandals — leading to their resignations. But “The Daily Show’s” Samantha Bee has chosen to be optimistic about what their re-emergence into politics means: it can do wonders for young people.

While appearing on the Comedy Central  show Wednesday night, Bee said their decisions to run for political office again give hope to young Americans looking forward to a bright political future, despite a penchant to post and upload pictures from some of their not-so-shareworthy moments.

“It truly is a great day for children across this nation,” Bee said. “[T]hink about it, most of today’s young people feel like they could never have a future in politics. And it’s hard to argue with them. They’re on Facebook 24/7, they’re sexting and Twit-picing, and over sharing everything they’re got, destroying any chance of a political career before they even know they want one.”

But, Bee said, Weiner and Spitzer are paving the way for future governors, senators and presidents who may have posted inappropriate photos in their younger years.

“Americans will judge you by the colorfulness of your character, not by the content of your camera phone,” she said.

Weiner resigned from the U.S. House of Representatives after posting inappropriate photos of himself to his Twitter account. The former congressman announced he would be running for New York City mayor in May.

Spitzer, on the other hand, resigned from his post as New York governor after soliciting prostitutes while he served as both attorney general and governor. Spitzer revealed earlier this month he would run for New York City comptroller, ironically against the madam who provided him with escorts.

Both are leading in their respective primaries.
