‘The Wizard of Oz’: The perfect analogy for 2016

At a recent Milo Yiannopoulos event at George Mason University, a #NeverTrump conservative voter referred to Donald Trump as “Dorothy with a bucket of water.” I learned in high school that the original 1900 novel by L. Frank Baum was actually about populism. Scholars throughout the years have debated the symbols in The Wizard of Oz ranging over everything from William Jennings Bryan to the American steelworkers. It then had me thinking with Donald Trump as a modern-day populist candidate, could we re-write the path to the Emerald City as the path to the White House?

We’ll begin with our protagonist, Dorothy Gale. She’s a simple farm girl whisked away via tornado to the faraway land of Oz. She represents the slice of America that longs for their leaders to be as straightforward as the yellow brick road, the piece of the pie that can’t be swayed by dirty tricks or freebies from Democrats, or patriotism shoved down the throat by Republicans. Dorothy is the UNDECIDED VOTER in swing states like Iowa and Ohio that are sick and tired of the circus visiting their diners every four years, only to fall in line with the swamp of Washington. They just want to be sent home to a land they remember where neighbors cared for one another.

Along her journey, Dorothy runs into the Scarecrow. The Scarecrow laments that if only he had a brain he could go far beyond the cornfield he calls home. Ultimately when meeting the Wizard he finds out that he had the brains and untapped potential all along. This reminds me of the groups towing the Democratic line blindly for at least 50 years: UNION MEMBERS that have their monthly dues funneled to candidates they haven’t voted for, and MINORITY GROUPS that have bought the “Republicans are racist/sexist/homophobic” rhetoric hook, line, and sinker (while ignoring the negative effects of LBJ’s “Great Society” and Bill Clinton’s crime bill).

The Tin Man, meanwhile, claims to have never had a heart, but also finds out from the Wizard that indeed he has the passion and drive to succeed. He was originally painted as a representative of the American steel worker, and I see no reason to discontinue this trend. I’m talking about the group that’s had the passion beaten out of them by liberals, academia, and Hollywood…the WORKING-CLASS WHITE-MALE. They’ve been told, while they work overtime to pay the mortgage that their jobs have been outsourced, their privilege hasn’t been checked, and watch helplessly as a American workforce that was diverse, but united under the same goals, has undergone the deepest division since the Los Angeles Riots of 1992.

The Cowardly Lion was the hardest to pin down, a creature that at first roars and challenges the gang to a fight: “Put em up, PUT EM UPPPPP!” but ultimately shows his true colors and starts crying after Toto bites him: “What’d ya have to do that FAWRRRR? AH-huh-huh-huhhhh!” Ladies and gentlemen, please welcome the BERNIE BROS. Bernie Sanders had insanely large crowds during the Democratic Primary process, a movement much like the crowds at Trump events. However, when they’re bitten by the cold, cruel realities of a $20 trillion deficit blocking any true path to free college, they retreat to their safe spaces. They’ve found themselves in a similar spot as Trump’s supporters who believe the election and system are rigged against them. In Bernie’s case, the hacked DNC emails prove just that.

With a crowd of undecided voters, Democratic constituencies that have been taken advantage of, overlooked and disaffected fathers and husbands, and Bernie bros, America now heads to the election, the Emerald City, the White House. Before we get to the Wizard, a few more analogies.

The Wicked Witch of the West…HILLARY RODHAM CLINTON of New York…or Arkansas…or Washington. I don’t think I need to say much more than that.

Glinda, the Good Witch of the North, was once the best friend of the Wicked Witch, as explained by the famous Broadway show “Wicked,” but through years and circumstances have grown apart. Hillary Clinton started her career out to help those with a limited voice in 1970s America, mainly women and children. Then came defending 12-year-old Kathy Shelton’s rapist and smearing the child in court, calling Monica Lewinsky a “narcissistic loony toon,” and physically and mentally intimidating her husband’s 1978 alleged rape victim, Juanita Broaddrick. Oh, and all the Clinton Foundation donations from countries that throw gay people off roofs. A career that began as a testament to public service has drowned in a lust for power and money.

The Flying Monkeys are a combination of SJWs and the ALTERNATIVE LIBERAL MEDIA (Gawker, Buzzed, HuffPost, etc.). These groups spend day and night stalking social media for prey, for poor souls who dare express anything remotely politically incorrect. An immediate referral is made of these savages to their employer, family, and anyone else that can ruin their life over a tweet, as the hay is ripped from their damaged and confused psyches that thought they were engaged in private jokes and conversations.

The Wicked Witch’s guards are the MAINSTREAM MEDIA (NBC, CNN, ABC, CBS.) While they faithfully protect the Witch and do her bidding day in and day out, secretly a part of them knows they’re letting pure evil run an enterprise over the land, so when Dorothy comes along and melts her, the guards are immediately grateful to their new heroine. CNN in some ways has realized the long error of its blind worship, cutting ties with DNC Chair and former Clinton News Network contributor Donna Brazile after Wikileaks revealed that Ms. Brazile gave not one, but TWO debate questions to Hillary Clinton before the Flint, Mi forum on March 6.

Now the moment you’ve all been waiting for, and yes, The Wizard is of course, DONALD J. TRUMP…but this isn’t some gushy-Trump piece. Hear me out. There are two versions of the great and powerful: first, the big head on the screen that’s overpowering and intimidating. This is the version the mainstream media has wanted to paint of Trump this entire election season…this is the man who gets piled on by the press and gets speeches cut down to “Nasty Woman” and “Mexicans are rapists.” He’s the guy that has scared away crucial groups that have been dying to “drain the swamp,” but just can’t get past the non-political language.

Then there’s the man behind the curtain, the Trump who has stood up for everyday Americans, reached out to minorities, vowed to protect the gay community against radical Islam, and has had a business record of promoting women to executive positions earlier than most companies would, as well as de-segregating clubs in Palm Beach. This is the Donald Trump who has wanted to see America win for 35 years, and has fought tooth and nail against the power structure in Washington and around the world…the man who will convince America to make their country great again on November 8.
