Texas’ ongoing abortion debate has given rise to a slew of offensive signs and slogans, but things got out of hand Tuesday when abortion supporters began chanting “Hail Satan” while a group of pro-life activists sang the Christian hymn, “Amazing Grace.”
The chanting came as thousands gathered outside the state capitol in Austin while the House and Senate reconvened for a brief special session called by Texas Gov. Rick Perry (R).
According to The Blaze, abortion supporters yelled the chant on multiple occasions and a blogger, Adam Cahnman, was able to capture it on film.
It’s likely the abortion protestors’ chants in praise of Satan were done solely to mock the pro-life supporters singing the Christian hymn, as opposed to a form of worship. Nevertheless, many can agree it was a strange and offensive tactic.
Tensions have risen between the two groups after legislation banning abortions after 20 weeks was passed by the Texas House of Representatives on June 25. To avoid it passing in the Senate, Texas Democrat Wendy Davis staged an 11-hour long filibuster that went beyond the session’s deadline for lawmakers to vote on the bill.
The Texas legislature is currently in recess but will reconvene July 9, when the Senate is expected to approve the bill.
But if the Texas Democrats decide to filibuster again, they are going to have to find someone else to do it, as Wendy Davis has said she will not filibuster the legislation a second time.
