Republicans must never have been big “Star Trek” fans, I guess.
Comedian and human incendiary device Bill Maher hit Republicans on the issue of voting in a Friday blog post for his “Real Time” website, criticizing the primary election process for producing general election candidates that are “nuts.” He entertained a replacement to most state primary systems, which has been floated by Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.): a nationwide “open” primary process, in which voters of all party registrations can cast a ballot, and the two candidates receiving the most votes enter a run-off. He didn’t say Republicans would necessarily agree.
“I think the Republicans like the primary system just fine. They think voting should be legal but discouraged, like interracial dating,” he wrote, invoking race out of nowhere. “And the result is they get the Tea Party, but then they can’t control them.”
Maher has tied the GOP’s position on voting rights to racism before, such as with voter ID laws.
He added in his post that such a replacement system could increase the number of perceived “moderate” candidates running in general elections, the downside of which is that the election process would become “boring.”
You can’t have it all, Bill.
