Hours after LeBron James announced his exit from the Miami Heat, his decision had already become political fodder for Florida’s gubernatorial race.
The race between between incumbent Rick Scott and former governor Charlie Crist has been contentious and is only expected to continue to heat up in the coming months.
Adding fuel to the fire, the Republican Party of Florida emailed and tweeted a campaign ad that paired James and Crist. The text of the photo read “What do these two guys have in common? They both ran away.”

The photo intends to highlight Crist’s split from the Republican party in his Senate bid of 2010. Facing a tough primary draw from current Senator Marco Rubio, Crist decided to run as an independent. His tactic failed and Rubio won the election.
Scott’s campaign has also hammered Crist on his choice to run for Senate in 2010 rather than reelection as governor, claiming he puts his political ambitions above all.
