First daughters briefed just like dad

First daughters Sasha and Malia tagged along on the president and first lady’s summer trip to Africa, which concluded Tuesday night. But before they could go, they were treated much like their mom and dad, first lady Michelle Obama shared with People Magazine.

“We brief them like I’m briefed and like the president is briefed,” the first lady said in a video she made for People, in which she answered readers’ questions. “They get a little packet of material so they understand where they’re going and some of the history of the country and what we are going to be doing and why.”

She also talked about how she gets the girls to avoid the summer slump. “We still hold on, in our household, to the screen time limitations over the summer,” she explained. (In previous interviews, Obama has said that the girls get no TV time during the week, unless it’s school-related.)

“We start at the beginning of the summer picking out their reading materials, so we work together to find interesting books,” Obama continued. “So there’s no excuse, ‘mom, I can’t find a book, I don’t like what I’m reading,'” the first lady continued, doing an impression of her daughters. “We just pile them on, we make sure they are traveling with their books.”
