Obama wedding registry scheme is ‘a total flop’

The Obama campaign’s event registry, which allows brides and grooms to ask their wedding guests to donate to the campaign in the place of wedding gifts “has been a total flop,” according to the New York Post.

Couples and event planners have mocked the registry since it debuted last month and have essentially ignored it.

The announcement on the Obama Event Registry website reaches out to party hosts, saying: “Got a birthday, anniversary, or wedding coming up? Let your friends know how important this election is to you—register with Obama 2012, and ask for a donation in lieu of a gift. It’s a great way to support the President on your big day. Plus, it’s a gift that we can all appreciate—and goes a lot further than a gravy bowl.”

The newlyweds have spoken: gravy boats—yes, they are useful, especially on Thanksgiving— and are more important than the success of the Obama campaign.

According to Meredith Klee, spokeswoman for the social-media tracking firm Topsy, the buzz surrounding the Obama Event Registry has been nearly absent from social networking sites like Twitter and Facebook.

“The number of links and stories about the announcement is very low since the news went live on June 22,” Klee told the Post.

Topsy has found only 1,137 posts about the registry on Twitter, and only a few hundred links to the registry have been shared on Facebook despite the fact that President Obama has 27 million fans on Facebook.
