Harvard Researchers: Trigger warnings ‘increase anxiety’ in students

While the microaggression PC culture has spread like a virus among many liberal college campuses, a new study indicates that so-called “trigger warnings” may actually be bad for students’ mental health.

Researchers from Harvard University’s psychology department recently conducted a study that analyzed the psychological effects of receiving trigger warnings. According to the researchers, the goal of the study was to provide insight into whether or not trigger warnings actually empower vulnerable individuals, or merely increase their vulnerability.

“Some argue that they empower vulnerable individuals by allowing them to psychologically prepare for or avoid disturbing content,” noted the researchers, “whereas others argue that such warnings undermine resilience to stress and increase vulnerability to psychopathology while constraining academic freedom.”

In the study, the researchers presented one population with a trigger warning prior to reading disturbing content, and compared the results to a separate population that received the same disturbing material without trigger warnings.

According to the results, the researchers made three key discoveries, all of which point to the notion that trigger warnings can actually be detrimental to a person’s mental health.

In their findings, they noted that 1) “trigger warnings increase peoples’ perceived emotional vulnerability to trauma,” 2) “trigger warnings increase peoples’ belief that trauma survivors are vulnerable,” and 3) “trigger warnings increase anxiety to written material perceived as harmful.”

While those who champion a culture of political correctness might think that trigger warnings helped improve emotional stability, this new research actually indicates the opposite. It proves that a hypersensitive culture is bad for a person’s mental health.

Additionally, trigger warnings help promote victimhood culture, which has enabled some students to utilize this concept as a tool for suppressing conservative speech. For example, Emory University recently threatened punishment to students who wrote “Trump” on the sidewalk in chalk after a number of students reported being triggered upon seeing the drawing.

Liberals always claim to be the party of science. If they care about mental health, the time has come to end “trigger warnings” in the classroom once and for all.
