College student arrested for hanging ‘Impeach Obama’ banner is suing the police

A college student is suing the police for violating his free speech rights after he was arrested for hanging a banner that said “Impeach Obama” from a Long Island expressway overpass.

Danny Martins, a senior at Hofstra University, has made a habit out of hanging signs expressing his political beliefs off of overpasses and pedestrian walkways on the North Shore of Long Island, according to the New York Post.

Martins was charged with disorderly conduct in June 2014 after hanging up a message and the American flag from a pedestrian walkway in Jericho, but a judge eventually dropped the charges citing his right to freedom of speech.

In the most recent charge against him, the Nassau County Police Department claimed his banner caused a safety hazard.
