Detroit residents have been awash in their own water wars for a while, as the city moves to cut off services to residents who haven’t paid their bills. Now PETA would like to help, CBS Detroit reports.
The animal rights organization is offering to pay one month’s water bill for 10 Detroit residents willing to go vegan for a month. In addition to providing funding to cover the water bill, a PETA member has donated money to provide each recipient with a basket of healthy, cost-effective, and possibly even tasty, vegan food to each recipient.
“We hope that by introducing people to eating vegan for this month-long pledge that it will stick with some folks and that they’ll wind up saving on the stress of dealing with some difficult health conditions and save money on health care costs in the long run,” said Lindsay Wright, a PETA member.
“At PETA we really see this as a win-win,” Wright said.
PETA’s president Ingrid E. Newkirk said that those who try vegan diets stop contributing to “the immensely wasteful use of water in meat and dairy farming.”
“Vegan meals are also a cost-effective way to help prevent health problems such as diabetes, high blood pressure, and heart conditions, the last thing that someone who is struggling financially needs to deal with.”
Animal rights enthusiasts trying to win supporters from a group of people who don’t pay their bills? Chalk that up to news of the ridiculous.
