In Texas, the largest electricity generator looks to add solar energy.
Luminant has announced plans to add 116 megawatts of solar power to its production by 2016, according to the Texas Tribune.
The company has cited economic competitiveness for the expansion.
“Solar generation costs have become increasingly competitive,” Luminant Chief Executive Office Mac McFarland said in a statement.
Luminant relies on coal for the majority of its power generation, but as solar costs fall, renewable energy becomes more viable.
Other energy companies have announced expansion into the solar market as well as costs drop.
Though subsidies within the renewable energy market are a cause for concern, some states such as Texas have markets where solar can be competitive without subsidies. That is a welcome step forward that avoids government favoritism within the market.
