The Obamas are headed to the big screen.
Calling it “one of the great love stories of our time,” Deadline reported Friday that filming will begin in July on “Southside With You,” a drama that will recount the first date of President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama.
The First Couple has recounted their first date in Chicago’s South Side many times and the bench where they had their first kiss was even commemorated with a plaque by the city in 2012.
“Southside with You” will span the day in the summer of 1989 when Michelle agreed to go out with Barack. The film will follow the couple as they tour the Art Institute of Chicago, take a long walk, and catch a a showing of Spike Lee’s “Do The Right Thing.”
The Obamas told this story as part of a campaign fundraiser back during the 2012 election and with all of Obama’s high-dollar Hollywood support, the idea for this film should not come as a surprise.
Tika Sumpter ( Get On Up, Gossip Girl) will play Michelle, according to Deadline. The young president has not yet been cast.
