John Oliver: ‘I couldn’t care less’ about 2016

Ever since the 2014 midterms ended last year, it has been all about the 2016 presidential election in the media cycle.

Never mind that they are still more than a year away. Forget that there are still dozens of viable of candidates. The news must cover every single poll breathlessly.

If you need an escape from the 24/7 horse race coverage, there is one show that has promised not to devote any air time to it in 2015 — HBO’s “Last Week Tonight with John Oliver.”

From Oliver’s interview with The Hollywood Reporter:

“One story you won’t see Oliver covering on Sunday nights is the 2016 presidential election. “I’ll think about that in 2016 — I couldn’t care less right now,” he told reporters. “I truly believe that the 2016 election is what the news likes to think about when it doesn’t want to think about anything. There’s no merit in it. Unless you’re in the same year as the thing you’re describing, it’s a complete waste of breath. It’s like a subject screensaver for the news. You know that if they’re saying “Oh, look, Jeb Bush is running,” you know that’s the equivalent of just, nothing is happening in the newsroom, or we were tired! … I have no interest whatsoever in the 2016 election at the start of 2015. There’s a time and a place for that, and it’s in 2016.”

However, if you were hoping to avoid Monday morning headlines that read,  “Oliver eviscerates/destroys/demolishes/etc.” you will probably have to keep waiting.

Oliver also told the Hollywood Reporter that they had bulked up on research staff and planned to continue the 11 minute segments on one newsy topic that he has become famous for.
