Univision won’t televise Miss USA pageant because of Trump’s comments on Mexican immigrants

Univision, the largest Spanish-language broadcaster in the U.S., announced Thursday its plans to drop the telecast of the Miss USA pageant, partially owned by Donald Trump, in protest to comments the presidential candidate made about Mexicans.

Trump, who partially owns the Miss USA pageant in conjuction with NBCUniversal, said last week in his 2016 campaign announcement, that Mexican immigrants are people with “lots of problems.”

“They’re bringing drugs, they’re bringing crime, they’re rapists…and some, I assume, are good people,” Trump said.

Univision, a company with 80 percent Hispanic employees, didn’t take too kindly to Trump’s very public remarks disparaging Mexican immigrants in the U.S.

Univision’s entertainment division announced Thursday they would be “ending the company’s business relationship with the Miss Universe Organization, which is part-owned by Donald J. Trump, based on his recent, insulting remarks about Mexican immigrants,” reported CNN.

Neither Trump nor NBCUniversal have released an official statement yet, but Trump expressed his personal opinion via Twitter:

Univision dumping Trump and his pageant is no light decision. The contract that Univison would broadcast and co-produce Miss USA and Miss Universe was reportedly decided just five months ago, according to CNN.

The business breakup may not be a major financial loss for the candidate who admitted “I’m really rich,” but the debacle could draw unwanted attention to Trump’s boisterous personality, which has already been heavily scrutinized and deemed punchline-worthy.

Looks like the pageant queens aren’t the only ones right now wishing for “world peace.”
