Who should be the next House Speaker with Kevin McCarthy out?

Speaker of the House certainly seems to be a thankless job. People are actually running away from it rather than running for it.

Speaker John Boehner announced his resignation, effective at the end of the month, but he may not be able to get out as quickly as he would have liked. The current Majority Leader, Kevin McCarthy, seemed all but certain to fill the role. However, McCarthy dropped out of the race today, a move which left many shocked.

Many want to know who the next House Speaker will be, but that answer is even less certain now.

Rep. Daniel Webster (Fla.), and Rep. Jason Chaffetz (Utah), who is the Oversight Committee Chairman are still in the running. Webster has been endorsed by the House Freedom Caucus, which came as another surprising move to many.

There are several other names being thrown around for the job.

One of those names is actually the chair of the Freedom Caucus, Rep. Jim Jordan (Ohio) — But Jordan has said he has no interest in the position. The same goes for Rep. Trey Gowdy (S.C.) and Rep. Paul Ryan (Wis.).

The Washington Post talked to Rep. Peter King (N.Y.), who suggested Rep. Tom Cole (Okla.), a respected former House GOP campaign chairman.

Other names mentioned include:

  • House Financial Services Committee Chairman Jeb Hensarling of Texas
  • Current Majority Whip Rep. Steve Scalise (La.), who had previously announced he would run for House Majority Leader
  • Chief Deputy Whip Rep. Patrick McHenry (N.C.)
  • Rep. Peter Roskam (Ill.)
  • Rep. Cathy McMorris-Rodgers (Wash.), who is the party’s highest-ranking woman as the conference chairwoman
  • House Budget Committee Chairman Tom Price (Ga.), who has run before

As of right now, there have been no formal additions to the Speaker’s race. It seems that more people are saying no rather than they’ll give it a go.
