Bobby Jindal says immigration is about ‘values’ not security

Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal (R) is trying to find his own narrative on immigration between the security hawks like Donald Trump and the open-border wing of the party that former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush (R) represents.

Jindal argued in a Sunday interview on ABC’s The Week that the most important feature of immigration should be assimilation and all immigrants “should want to become Americans.”

“I think we need to insist that folks who come here come here legally, learn English, adopt our values, roll up our sleeves and get to work,” Jindal said. “I think we need to insist that folks who come here come here legally, learn English, adopt our values, roll up our sleeves and get to work.”

The governor is the child of immigrant parents who moved to the U.S. from India to attend college.

“We don’t make people come here. If they want to come here, they should want to be Americans,” he continued. “Millions of people across this world want to come here. A smart immigration policy allows people to come here legally that make our country stronger. That’s just common sense.”
