This week, Saturday Night Live began their Weekend Update by focusing on the first Democrat primary debate held on Tuesday, and the overall 2016 presidential election.
Tuesday’s debate was held in Las Vegas, which could have prompted a whole number of jokes about Sin City. Rather, cast member Colin Jost pointed out that “Vegas was the perfect city, since the debate featured old white people who keep playing, no matter how bad they’re losing.”
Jost also mentioned the tweet sent out by Mike Huckabee, about trusting his tax dollars with Bernie Sanders the same way he trusts a North Korean chef with his Labrador.
The punchline there was that Jost trusts “Mike Huckabee with a joke the way I trust Jared with my laptop.” Jost was referring to the former spokesman for Subway who was found to have child pornography on his computer.
As Jost and fellow cast member Michael Che moved onto talking about the Republican candidates, they made it perfectly clear that they don’t want an outsider as president. This was with regards to Donald Trump and Ben Carson leading in the polls. Carson was the subject of his very own joke, which equated him to a soft-spoken mentally challenged man.
Jost said they “get that Trump and Carson are outsiders, and that sounds exciting. But when do you ever really want an outsider?” He used the example of getting your laptop fixed.
Che offered that “the presidency should not be an open call, like we can’t find our country’s leader the same way Nick Cannon finds a ventriloquist.” Che did point out though that at least that ventriloquist, who would be a contest auditioning for America’s Got Talent, has experience.
Carly Fiorina also made it into the mix, as Jost pointed out she was fired from her position as HP CEO, and then lost her Senate race.
Che implored “please, America, hold your president to a higher standard than just being over 35 and a citizen.”
Perhaps voters should more importantly hold themselves to a higher standard than taking advice from comedians whose obsession seems to be making fun of Republicans, particularly the black neurosurgeon who is running.
