President Barack Obama’s signature healthcare law is ‘screwing over’ young Americans, according to the Republican National Committee.
On Wednesday, the political organization sent out an email explaining how Obamacare is hurting young people and encouraging supporters to donate in order to expand youth outreach efforts.
“It’s time Young Americans understand the truth about why our premiums are doubling, why we’re losing our doctors, and why we might have to choose between paying for school and paying for health care,” National Youth Director Elliott Echols wrote in the email. “Here’s the truth: ObamaCare is screwing us over.”
Echols argued that the President has been “taking advantage” of young people. The link in the email takes supporters to a fundraising page that outlines the RNC’s commitment to reaching youth, especially through technology. The page highlights the importance of investing in young leaders and changing the tone and style of its communications with millennials.
“The RNC is working for the youth of America,” the page reads.
The committee only recently brought Echols on board as part of a national push to engage with the key youth demographic — a demographic that Obama won handily in both the 2008 and 2012 elections. The GOP has struggled to connect with youth, who view the Party as “old and detached from pop culture.” This is especially on social issues, prompting the GOP to fight for a more inclusive party. But when it comes to economic issues, the GOP is hoping to tap into the fiscal sense of millennials.
“Young Americans are independent-minded people who are concerned about getting our nation’s economy back on track and I look forward to getting their input on how we move forward as a country and as a party,” Priebus said at the time of Echols’ hiring.
And right now turning attention to the flaws of Obamacare is a strategy that seems to be working, but the GOP still has a long way to go to win over twentysomethings.
