Chris Rock thinks President Barack Obama is his daddy.
During a press conference at the U.S. Capitol Wednesday, the comedian explained he supports Obama’s gun control plan, because “the President and the First Lady are kinda like the mom and the dad of the country, and when your dad says something you listen.”
“When you don’t it usually bites you in the ass later on,” he concluded, “So I’m here to support the president.”
Rock’s perception of the role of commander-in-chief seems to have drastically changed in the past five years. In 2007, he called President George W. Bush “retarded.” (Unless, to Rock, “dad” is a synonym for ‘retard.’)
After Rock finished paying his respects to Abba Obama, actor Adam Scott urged Congress to pass Obama’s “sensible legislation.”
The “Parks and Recreation” star identified himself as a “supporter of the Second Amendment,” but said “criminal background checks for the sale of firearms are common sense.”
“If we as a people don’t act after Sandy Hook,” Scott added, “then we as a people are broken.”
Actress Amanda Peet also spoke at the presser and demanded, among other things, more federal funding “so that scientists can study the relationship between media violence and actual violence.”
Without this funding, Peet said, “It’s going to be very hard to design a public health plan that can prevent these kinds of tragedies.”
Rock, Scott and Peet joined the Mayors Against Illegal Guns and the Law Center to Prevent Gun Violence for Wednesday’s press junket to “call on Congress to act on President Obama’s plan to reduce gun violence, including background checks for all gun sales and an assault weapons ban,” according to a statement.
Rep. Mike Thompson,(D-Calif.), singer Tony Bennett, John Feinblatt, the chief policy adviser to Mayor Michael Bloomberg, and other gun control activists also spoke out in support of Obama’s gun control proposals during Wednesday’s event.
