Mets fans boo Bill de Blasio pretty dang loudly at Opening Day

The least popular guy wearing a New York Mets jersey at Citi Field Monday was the mayor.

Bill de Blasio, New York City’s newly elected chief official, took the mound at the home of the Mets to throw out the first pitch prior to the team’s season opener against the Washington Nationals. He wasn’t welcomed by the crowd so much as he was loathed by it.

Humorously, de Blasio’s number 6 jersey honored a player who didn’t even play for the hometown club. It was in tribute to Rico Petrocelli, according to SILive.com, a fellow Brooklyn native who represented the Boston Red Sox in the 1960s and 70s. De Blasio is a known Red Sox fan.

The Mets defeated the Sox in one of the most famous World Series — which produced one of the pastime’s most infamous moments — in 1986.

“Let’s just say, I have a special appreciation for the New York Mets. We’ll leave it at that,” de Blasio said before the game Monday, SILive.com reported.

The Nationals prevailed over the Mets in extra innings, 9-7.
