Former Vice-President Dick Cheney is an unlikely fashion consultant for the hip-hop community, but he commented nevertheless on why it isn’t much into cowboy hats.
Outside a taping of CBS’ “Face the Nation” over the weekend, Cheney was asked for his opinion as a “hat connoisseur” why “hip-hop hasn’t embraced the hats.”
“I don’t know,” he responded quizzically. “Maybe it’s ’cause I’m a cowboy from Wyoming.”
He was then asked if he’d like to see Kanye West or Jay-Z in one his signature ten-gallons, and he laughed politely and said he’d leave it up to them.
“But if Cheney’s wearing it, it’s probably a little too conservative for the hip-hop crowd,” Cheney added.
The former VP under President George W. Bush said last year that he had adopted cowboy hats as part of his wardrobe for medical reasons, not to make a fashion statement. Medication he has taken to help his body accept a new heart increase the risk skin caner, he said, so his doctors advised him to don a wide-brimmed hat outdoors.
“It’s not because I suddenly decided I looked better with a Stetson. There are certain things you have to guard against,” he said.
