In recognition of Women’s Equality Day, New York City mayoral candidate Anthony Weiner said he has been a “staunch supporter of women’s rights” throughout his entire career.
“When women have equal rights, our society is better off,” Weiner said in an e-mail message to supporters, according to The Washington Examiner. “This is one of my long-held beliefs and it’s why I have been such a staunch supporter of women’s rights my entire career.”
Weiner was involved in a sexting scandal in 2011 which ultimately led to his resignation from Congress.
He recently admitted to sexting with women after leaving office. Since then, he has been dropping in the polls for New York City mayor.
President Barack Obama proclaimed August 26, 2013 as Women’s Equality Day.
Obama said his administration has been “committed to advancing the historic march toward gender equality” from the beginning of his first term in office.
“We have fought for equal pay, prohibited gender discrimination in America’s healthcare system, and established the White House Council on Women and Girls, which works to ensure fair treatment in all matters of public policy,” Obama said.
