[WATCH] Democratic rep tips her cap to our 400-year-old constitution

Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee (D-Texas) paid tribute to America’s 400-year-old constitutional republic Wednesday, surprising many colonial settlers of the 17th and 18th centuries that they didn’t really have to revolt, after all.

“Maybe I should offer a good thanks to the distinguished members of the majority, the Republicans, my chairman and others,” she said after being recognized to speak on the House floor, “for giving us an opportunity to have a deliberative constitutional discussion that reinforces the sanctity of this nation and how well it is that we have lasted some 400 years, operating under a constitution that clearly defines what is constitutional and what is not.”

James I and Virginia Gov. Thomas Dale could not be reached for comment.

(The U.S. Constitution was actually signed Sept. 17, 1787, by a majority of delegates to the Constitutional Convention, and nine states had ratified it — the required number for the document to become binding — by 1788.)
