Democrats are baffled: They view Donald Trump as one of the worst picks for president in U.S. history, and yet, he is nearly tied with Hillary Clinton in the polls. Some liberals are even starting to panic that the former first lady could lose, and are demanding she step down so Sen. Bernie Sanders can run and win.
H.A. Goodman wrote in The Huffington Post on Monday that Clinton’s numbers have been collapsing and time is not on her side.
According to Real Clear Politics, Clinton’s lead in a four-way race between Trump, Gary Johnson, and Jill Stein has shrunk from 7.5 percent in early August to just 2.2 percent in early September.
Adding to the Democrats’ headache is that Clinton’s numbers in swing states like Florida, Iowa, Ohio, Nevada, and North Carolina are too close for comfort.
These results are partially due to the mistaken belief that Clinton would absorb of all of Bernie’s supporters when she won the primary. That wasn’t the case. According to an Economist/YouGov poll only 57 percent of Bernie supporters planned on casting their vote for Clinton.
That means more than 5.6 million progressives are leaving the Democratic coalition, including Goodman.
“Democrats need Bernie Sanders now more than ever. It’s time for anyone who truly fears the dangers of a Trump presidency to admit the DNC’s decision to undermine Sanders was a colossal mistake,” Goodman wrote. “It’s also time for people to realize that Clinton’s current polling lead won’t hold up with further controversy.”
Between the email scandals, WikiLeaks, the Clinton Foundation, and the recent health scare, some Democrats are just waiting for the next shoe to drop, and hoping Sanders will be there to hold everything together and win the White House.
