Secret Service personnel immediately detained a man Monday evening accused of throwing firecrackers over the White House’s north fence, just hours after a deadly shooting in the Washington Navy Yard that left the nation’s capital on edge.
The incident, which occurred around 6:30 p.m., prompted a temporary lockdown of the area as authorities attempted to ascertain the threat. Members of the press on the grounds were hurried to safety. ABC News reported that the lockdown lasted for nearly 30 minutes before Secret Service deemed the threat cleared.
It was widely reported that the man likely will be charged with illegally throwing a projectile.
