Rep. John Lewis breaks it down to Pharrell’s ‘Happy’

It doesn’t matter if you’re a Republican or Democrat, an awesome video like this is one that offers bipartisan entertainment.

Civil rights icon Rep. John Lewis (D-Ga.) slipped on his dancing shoes earlier this week and busted a move to the popular Pharrell song “Happy.” Recorded by the congressman’s staff members, a video shows Lewis shedding his normally serious expression and grooving to the tune.

Lewis can be heard excitedly saying, “This is my song!”

Staffer Rachelle O’Neill, who uploaded the video, pushed the congressman to sing along.

“I’m happy,” the 74-year-old sang, obliging. “What you wanna do.”

“Nothing can bring me down,” Lewis, the last surviving organizer of 1963’s March on Washington, exclaimed.

Closing out his dance party, Lewis encouraged viewers to “be happy, everybody.”

“That’s what the government is supposed to do,” he joked. “Bring happiness to everybody.”

According to USA Todaymembers of Lewis’ staff held a birthday celebration for the civil rights figure at his Atlanta, Ga., district office. When the group decided to put “Happy” on, Lewis began twisting his hips, clapping and dancing along with the tune.

“The congressman, ever since Pharrell came out with the song, he’s wanted to know, ‘Who sings that song? Who sings that song?” Michael Collins, Lewis’ chief of staff, told USA Today. “He gets into it. The congressman has this incredible spirit. Whenever he hears the song, he’s like, ‘Turn it up. Turn it up.’ Whenever he hears it, he just lights up.”
