With the government shutdown heading into a third day, federal workers deemed non-essential continue to face furloughs, national parks remain closed and Congress still sits in gridlock.
Though thousands of Americans employed by the government go without pay, Congressmen and women in both the House and the Senate continue collecting a paycheck as the debate on a continuing resolution wages on. Though both Senators and Representatives are deemed “essential,” many lawmakers have decided to forego their hefty government paycheck, opting to either refuse their salaries or donate it to charity during the time the government remains shuttered.
Congressmen and women make a whopping $174,000, but according to The Washington Post, at least 100 — 53 Republicans and 47 Democrats — have refused pay. And the list keeps growing.
