Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has been hospitalized because of a blood clot that resulted from her earlier concussion.
Clinton has been admitted to New York-Presbyterian Hospital and is being treated with anti-coagulants, according to her spokesman, Philippe Reines. The clot was discovered during a follow-up visit to doctors on Sunday.
“This is a clot in the vein that is situated in the space between the brain and the skull behind the right ear,” said a statement from Dr. Lisa Bardack of Mt. Kisco Medical Group and Dr. Gigi El-Bayoumi of George Washington University released Monday. “It did not result in a stroke, or neurological damage.”
Clinton suffered a concussion earlier this month when she fainted due to dehydration brought on by the stomach flu. Her concussion prevented her from testifying in the scheduled Senate Foreign Relations Committee hearings on Benghazi during the following week.
UPDATE: CNN‘s chief medical correspondent Dr. Sanjay Gupta says the use of anti-coagulants might indicate that Clinton’s clot is not in her brain. “I think it’s very unlikely this is a blood clot on top of the brain or around the brain specifically, because you just don’t treat blood clots on the brain that way,” Gupta said. “That would worsen the bleeding.” According to CNN, the clot is likely in a heart vein or artery.
