In joining Twitter, Hillary Clinton leaves the door open for 2016 bid

The Twitterverse went abuzz Monday as news broke that former Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton was making her long-awaited debut on the social media – especially when she hinted at a potential run for president in 2016.

Clinton, who is using the handle @HillaryClinton, suggested that she could re-enter politics in the future by ending her Twitter bio with the letters “TBD.”

“Wife, mom, lawyer, women & kids advocate, FLOAR, FLOTUS, US Senator, SecState, author, dog owner, hair icon, pantsuit aficionado, glass ceiling cracker, TBD…”

In a recent Public Policy Polling study, Clinton is well ahead of all other Democrats in the race for president in 2016, easily beating incumbent Vice President Joe Biden 63 percent to 13 percent. She is also 10 points ahead of both Sens. Rand Paul of Kentucky and Marco Rubio of Florida in a general election head-to-head match, but statistically tied with New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie.

Posting her first tweet around 12:45pm Eastern on Monday, Clinton thanked the co-creators of the Tumblr page “Texts from Hillary” for inspiring her to join. She also uses the infamous “Texts from Hillary” photo – in which Clinton can be seen reading something on her Blackberry – as her Twitter icon.

Clinton’s decision to join Twitter comes just two months after her husband, former President Bill Clinton, joined with the help of Comedy Central host Stephen Colbert. Currently, she only follows her husband, daughter Chelsea, and two of the Clinton Foundation’s Twitter accounts.

The former president even gave his wife a warm welcome to Twitter, cracking a joke about whether the social networking site has a “family plan” for frequent tweeting.
