Sen. Al Franken (D-Minn.) is trying to prove that he’s still funny.
The former “Saturday Night Live” writer compared serving as a senator to working on the set of SNL while bidding goodbye to outgoing Sen. Mark Begich (D-Alaska) on the Senate floor Thursday.
“A lot of people ask me, is being a senator as much fun as working on ‘Saturday Night Live,'” detailed Franken. “And the answer, of course, is no! It’s not close. But, it’s the best job I’ve ever had. And it means so much to us what we can do for our state.”
Franken wrote, performed and produced sketches for SNL for almost 20 years before running for office and being elected to the Senate in 2008.
However, Franken’s farewell to Begich wasn’t all fun and games. Adopting a more serious tone, the Minnesota senator more described Begich as a “happy warrior” with “tremendous heart.”
“You brought joy and humor and optimism to this body, and I thank you, my friend, for that,” Franken said, concluding his speech.
Begich lost his Senate seat to Republican challenger Dan Sullivan during the midterm election in November.
