Unhappy customers nationwide are wondering what the return policy is on the new, unaffordable health care plans they were mandated to purchase under President Obama’s health care law.
Obamacare boxes in millennials, and to be a young adult in this new health care marketplace is not to be envied.
For healthy twenty-somethings who may not set foot in a doctor’s office all year, shelling out thousands of dollars in premiums makes no economic sense. It is no wonder that many young adults decided not to enroll in a plan.
That said, for Obamacare to work, it needs young adults to pay into the system, and the law was designed to get money from millennials whether they choose to enroll in it or not.
For those who do not purchase a plan, Obamacare confiscates their money at the end of the year in the form of tax penalties. According to the White House, punishing Americans is a good way to force them to pay for health coverage.
However, for many young Americans, the Obamacare income tax penalty will come as quite a shock.
Higher premiums, higher out-of-pocket costs, and tax penalties. It wasn’t supposed to be this way, and now more and more young Americans want to exchange this defective law for one that works for their budgets.
For too long, Washington politicians have tried to convince Americans that the best way to address rising medical costs is through government-controlled health care.
There is an alternative to this top-down, Washington model.
We can address our current health care system’s shortcomings by making smart reforms that encourage competition, reduce costs and increase choice.
Under Republican proposals, we can eliminate bureaucratic mandates that force Americans to pay for types of coverage they do not need. Instead of the IRS levying a tax penalty on people who do not buy insurance, we can encourage people to get coverage through tax credits. And, we can make sure people with pre-existing conditions can afford to obtain coverage by supporting State-based high risk pools.
Two years of the president’s health care law have made health care matters worse for too many hardworking Americans. They want to return this law, get their money back, and find a better way forward. The president should abandon the sinking ship of Obamacare and work with Congress on real health care reform that addresses the cost of care.
