Donald Trump returned to Liberty University on Monday for the first time in almost four years. Students could have been looking at the future president rather than the businessman he was when he last visited in 2012.
Liberty warmly welcomed Trump to convocation with a video of his most recognizable quotes and moments along the campaign trail. As the classical music played in the background, it felt more like an inauguration for the possible future president.
Liberty President Jerry Falwell made it clear he was not endorsing Mr. Trump for president, but said, “My admiration has grown for Mr. Trump,” and “he is loyal to his friends.” He also said Trump reminded him of his own father Jerry Falwell Senior, and said both men possess the courage to stand up for what they believe is right, and are not afraid to vocalize it on a large platform.
“Donald Trump is a breath of fresh air in a nation where the political establishment of both parties has betrayed their constituencies time and time again, with broken promises and a continuation of the status quo.”
“He cannot be bought,” Falwell continued. “He is not a puppet on a string like many other candidates.”
During his speech, Trump made an appeal to the overwhelmingly Christian student body by sharing a Bible verse, 2 Corinthians 3:17, which reads, “Now the Lord is that Spirit: and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty.”
“We’re going to protect Christianity,” Trump said. “I can say that. I don’t have to be politically correct.”
Trump went through his usual speech about strengthening our military and our borders.
Former Liberty student Lauren Lassiter, who watched the speech from home, said she really likes Donald Trump because she believes he will do what he says.
“He actually says things that get people talking. The other candidates don’t really speak up like Trump does,” she said.
Ending his speech on a positive note, Trump left students with a few words of advise, telling them to “never quit” and to go into a career that “you love.”
Another day, and another large venue for Trump ended with a pleased crowd.
One student even cheered, “You make me proud to be an American.”
