MSNBC host Chris Matthews offered high praise for Democratic ideals and policies in a new commercial encouraging viewers to “Lean Forward,” and even went so far as to credit liberalism with helping the United States gain independence from Great Britain.
Matthews lauded progressive policies in a new MSNBC ad, Newsbusters reported Tuesday. The commercial, set in Philadelphia’s Independence Hall, features the “Hardball” host discussing the challenges and victories in American history, from women’s suffrage to civil rights to the American Revolution.
“It took 22 months of men debating in this room to achieve the Declaration of Independence,” Matthews says. “Progressive change takes times.”
He goes on to praise progressive policies for leading to the abolishment of slavery — though President Abraham Lincoln, a Republican, ended slavery and a Republican Congress passed the 13th, 14th and 15th Amendments — and equal voting rights, and champions liberalism as the cause of many of the country’s biggest successes.
While America has succeeded greatly because of progressive politics, according to Matthews, gay rights and equal pay will be uphill battles, as winning independence from Great Britain was.
“Voting rights have taken a brutal fight, as will the case for marriage equality and equal pay for men and women,” he claims.
But, as Matthews affirms, America’s greatest triumphs are the result of liberalism in action.
“Liberalism always wins eventually, just as it did here in Philadelphia in the sweltering summer of 1776,” Matthews concludes.
