This absurd ad, courtesy of a pro-Rand Paul super-PAC, might be the most American thing you’ve ever seen.
It involves Paul as “The Rand Man,” a WWE wrestler about to take out Barack Obama:
LOTS of fire-breathing bald eagles:
And a cast of villains like Ted Cruz, “the capitulating Canadian”:
The ad, created by America’s Liberty PAC, revolves around Sunday’s Senate battle over Patriot Act reauthorization.
Just before Memorial Day, Paul blocked Mitch McConnell’s efforts to extend the Patriot Act provisions about to expire–like Section 215, which the government claims justifies its metadata gathering. On Sunday they will once again attempt to pass legislation.
Paul wants to let the provisions sunset. Others (like “capitulating Canadian” Cruz) back a White House-endorsed bill that would change a few aspects of NSA spying while extending the Patriot Act. Privacy advocates have become increasingly leery of this bill, particularly after a federal court ruled that Section 215 does not actually justify the NSA’s mass surveillance.
