Jon Stewart mocks Catholic Republicans over Pope’s encyclical on climate change

The pope’s new encyclical on the environment, Laudato Si’, has not been well received by some politically conservative Catholics–and Jon Stewart, sudden expert on Catholic theology, is horrified.

The controversial papal letter takes an apocalyptic view on climate change and the state of the world–“Doomsday predictions can no longer be met with irony or disdain”–and calls for an end to fossil fuels, among other things.

Some Catholic Republicans, like Jeb Bush, have taken the position that the pope does not necessarily speak with authority on matter of science and policy.

“Look, Republicans reacting to the pope’s honest call for environmental consciousness with hostility is not the way to go,” Stewart huffed.

He also made sure to insinuate that they’re all appealing to a “higher authority than God”—BIG OIL. (Insert eye-roll.)
