Collegians for a Constructive Tomorrow (CFACT) hosted a lunchtime event at CPAC today titled Gore v. Bear. From its title, one would have thought that the event would feature a constructive debate on the merits of “global warming” and energy policy. Unfortunately, any attendees of the event expecting intelligent conversation were sorely disappointed.
“Gore v. Bear” featured such intellectual events as a rigged push-up contest, arm-wrestling, and a short quiz with obvious answers. All conducted by two individuals in a polar bear costume and an Al Gore mask. I was sorely disappointed by the event’s quality (or lack thereof). I went in expecting to hear both sides of “global warming” and energy/environmental policy articulated intelligently. No such luck.
However, the event was not completely without merit, as CFACT’s Marc Morano opened the event with about fifteen minutes of remarks. Morano was a fountain of inconvenient facts for the environmentalist lobby and those in favor of policies like cap and trade. Morano pronounced “global warming” dead, pointing out that science was increasingly disproving the theory of man-made global warming. He slammed the United Nations climate process, saying that it “lies in tatters” and that it has reached the point where it closely resembles “medieval witchcraft.” Morano also pointed out that climate alarmists are working to engineer the conversation in such a way so as to be able to blame nearly every weather and climate phenomenon on “global warming.”
Morano spoke so quickly that, at times, it was difficult to follow his train of thought. However, he clearly stressed the importance of continuing to take advantage of natural resources in the form of fossil fuels. During a brief Q&A, I asked him about the potential for getting nuclear energy back into serious development. Morano responded that, while the first new plant after 30-some years is opening soon, he sees “nuclear power being in limbo indefinitely” and that we have Jane Fonda to thank for that.
