Talk about a close call.
Sen. Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn.) attended a press conference at the Milford Metro-North Station in his home state on Friday to demand safety accountability on the Metro-North railway.
But just as Milford, Conn., Mayor Ben Blake was saying, “safety, as you know, is paramount,” an Amtrak train came barreling through the station, nearly hitting the senator, Connecticut’s WTNH reported.
Blumenthal didn’t have a comment on the incident after the press conference, the news station reported.
He has, however, been ardently calling for safety accountability on the railway.
Rail operators must strive for perfection when it comes to safety—125,000 daily commuters on Metro-North’s New Haven line deserve that much.

The Metro-North Railroad has received $552,000 in fines throughout the past 10 years for safety violations and defects. Since 2004, the railway was given 139 violations.
Blumenthal, though, was standing dangerously close to the edge of the platform and blatantly ignored the thick yellow line designed to keep passengers a safe distance away from the tracks and incoming trains.
Watch Blumenthal’s near brush with death.
