Current political rhetoric accuses the Republican party of being to the far right of former President Ronald Reagan. But comedian Bill Maher, called that “bulls**t,” saying Reagan was the “original, official pitchman for bats**t.”
The host of ‘Real Time with Bill Maher‘ ripped into the former President on Friday night, saying Reagan would fit right in with the current Republican party — because he created the guidelines for it.
“Ronald Reagan was an anti-government, union busting, race baiting, anti-abortion, anti-gay, anti-intellectual who cut rich people’s taxes in half, had an incurable case of the military industrial complex and said Medicare was socialism that would destroy our freedom,” Maher said. “Sounds like he would fit in just fine.”
Maher added that Reagan did some things the GOP didn’t like, but ultimately “wrote the playbook” for everything the Republican party does today. The comedian accused the former President of causing income inequality, scaring people into hating socialized medicine — “drama queen much?” — and “making s**t up.”
“Both sides really should stop pretending that he was something other than the man most responsible for our decline,” Maher added. “And I do mean both sides.”
The host said it makes sense for Republicans to “worship” Reagan, since they’re the “religious party.” He joked that they tried to “elect his haircut” in the 2012 presidential election, referencing GOP candidate Mitt Romney. But Maher said he didn’t understand why President Obama treats Reagan like “a brother from another mother.”
“He was patient zero for everything you’re fighting against now,” he closed. “He was the original teabagger. Stop agreeing he was a saint, especially when his two miracles were turning water into polluted water and walking on the poor.”
